About Ballinrobe

In the heart of South Mayo

Ballinrobe is a town with a diverse population of approximately 3,000 situated in the heart of Mayo’s lake district and offers much to enjoy in the immediate locality such as fishing, water sports and golf.

We are home to Mayo’s only Racecourse and unsurprisingly, due to it’s central location Ballinrobe is very popular base for commuters with Castlebar, Westport and Galway all within easy driving distance. Access to the M7 motorway to Dublin is via Tuam just 20 minutes drive away and Ireland West Airport is approximately 40 minutes away.

A Wealth of Local Amenities

Local amenities include several large supermarkets, smaller speciality shops and bakeries and a selection of bars and restaurants. Commencement of works to construct a new town hall is imminent, the project is set to be a flagship development for the south Mayo town in the coming years.

The proposal is to build a hall with a gross floor area of 1000m2. It will consist of an auditorium and main hall area with seating for over 400 people and capable of hosting various shows and community events.

Ballinrobe Community School (Post-Primary) and St. Joseph’s Primary are the town schools and are well regarded and well equipped.

Major employers in the area include McHale Farm Machinery, Costello & McDermott, Super Value, Tesco and Aldi supermarkets, Jennings Meats, CJ Sheeran Ltd., DPD Couriers, Walsh Mechanical Engineering, OCL Laundry, Aurivo etc.

There are several vibrant clubs in the town including the local GAA who are at home in Flanagan Park and Ballinrobe Rugby and Soccer clubs who play in Ballinrobe town park – locally known as “The Green”.  We also have an 18 hole parkland golf course, a well equipped sports centre, athletics and cycling clubs and of course Ballinrobe justly lays claim to the title of Lake Angling Capital of the West. The proximity of the great lakes of Mask, Carra and Corrib to the town affords the angler a choice of waters not available anywhere else in Europe.

For climbers and nature lovers we are on the doorstep of Connemara, next to the Partry hills, and Tourmakeady/Clonbur Gaeltacht, a mere 30 minutes to beautiful Mayo and Galway coast lines, and the islands of Achill, Inis Boffin, Inis Turk and Clare island.

Believe in Ballinrobe

“Believe in Ballinrobe” is a fantastic new movement which aims to improve and enhance the town for the benefit of everyone, through volunteering, advocacy and supporting community initiatives.  The aim is to pair people’s passions and skill sets to community initiatives, clubs and organisations in order to create beneficial projects and events to enhance the overall benefits and assets of the area.

For tourists and commuters: 20 minutes Westport, Castlebar, Claremorris, 40 minutes to Galway city and 40 minutes from Ireland West International airport.
